Sulfated biochemicals
The patented sulfation technology enables Cysbio to genetically engineer microbes so they acquire the ability to perform the enzymatic sulfation of phenolic compounds. This allows targeting a cost effective production of a broad range of novel molecules that are otherwise very difficult to produce, and it can facilitate a cheaper route to produce some existing phenolic compounds. It also enables the creation of microbial production strains that can function as biocatalysis factories for sulfation of a wide range of existing compounds.
Cysbio’s Sulfation Technology can for example be used to:
- Produce novel sulfated phenolic compounds – The Sulfation Platform Technology makes it possible to enzymatically produce a broad selection of different sulfated biochemicals at an attractive cost level. This includes several compounds that were previously either hard or impossible to produce chemically.
- Detoxify to enablie the production of otherwise toxic compounds – Since sulfated phenolic compounds are generally non-toxic and soluble in water, the sulfation technology can be used to facilitate the production of aromatic compounds which were previously impossible to produce by fermentation due to their toxicity to the production organism. In this approach, a sulfated product is produced as an intermediate and subsequently converted to the final phenolic product at the end of the fermentation.
- Improve the molecular characteristics of a compound – Sulfation is well known to have several beneficial effects on the molecular characteristics of a compound. Sulfation has for example been shown to increase both the solubility, and bioavailability of multiple drugs. In addition, sulfation also adds a charged group, greatly expanding the different chemical interactions that a compound can participate in. As the sulfation can be performed at a relatively low cost this can be a cost effective approach to improve the molecular features of certain compounds.
